Well, the Japanese makers in those days were famously good at cloning other designs. And, they don't look identical to me, although quite similar.
I don't see the 2 offset horizontal openings on the Shaller 505 that yours have- but maybe that's just because the Shallers have the black face on them, and I'm not seeing black-on-black openings in that particular photo.
And, if it's truly a single coil, what's the point of those slots anyway?
I suspect that, if they were actual Shallers, removal of one of the pups might disclose an identification of some sort.
A very nice guitar, Frank. I like the way they frosted the inside of the cavity to disguise the wiring- that may just be a consequence of the manufacturing process anyway, but it looks nice and clean. The sculpturing on the back of the headstock, where it joins the neck, is also interesting, don't know that I've seen that before. |

You're not looking at the right pickup.Frank is referring to the NR 508,a bit futher down the page.

The pickup looks exactly the same, except that it seems to be set up for mounting on an acoustic guitar, having a clamping mechanism to mount it at the end if fret board.
Here's a closeup of the Elk pickup.

Of coarse,it's still possible that the Elk pickup is a Japanese made clone of the Schaller. Removing one and seeing if it has any identification on it does seem like a good idea. |

| Elk purchased and sold German Microphones with it lineup, so its not uncommon that pickup not also included. I saw that model for sale in Okinawa Japan in the 1970's and some where still there when I left Okinawa in 1989. |
