If your guitar is from the early 90's it would be a Kramer since Gibson didn't take over the name until 1997.
The American Showsters do not appear in my price guides so I can't tell you much about value. Judging from the other Kramer guitars listed, $1,200 sounds high although your fella certainly could have paid that if he bought it new. The most expensive "used" Kramers listed are the signature models and their values hover around $700 in Excellent condition.
