If the finish is light brown, it is probably faded cherry. If it is dark brown it is walnut. The red in the cherry finishes faded over time so these days, most of them look brown. If you have a finish that is still red, you have something. Red in the finish can add 30% to the value of a guitar originally finished in cherry.

Here is an auction for a 1973 SG in faded cherry. It has a Bigsby rather than your Lyre Vibrola which makes it a bit less desirable but it does give you an approximate eBay value at $1,700.

In good condition we are talking about a guitar worth between $2,000-$3,000.

These early 70's SGs had a three piece neck. Are the cracks in the neck the result of the wood seperating along the seams?

The Lyre Vibrola tailpiece is a definate plus and increases the value of your instrument. The missing whammy isn't a huge deal since most whammys have been lost over time. A crack where the pots are is not a huge deal either since it will not effect the playability of the instrument.

What finish does it have?

If you are indeed in Kansas City, I would recommend that you have Keith George take a look at it. The repairs shouldn't cost a lot and will add considerable value to the resale value of your instrument. As it stands, you probably wouldn't get $2,000, but with repairs you might get there. sb

It has a crack in the body where the pots are, as well as a crack on either side of the neck. It looks like it can be fixed , as far as I can tell anywho. It has the Lyre Vibrola tailpiece, but the whammy bar is missing. Looks like everything else is there, though, including a very rough OHSC. Any ideas what this thing might bring as-is?
