Hound Dog Taylor was born in Natchez, Mississippi in 1915 (although some sources say 1917). He originally played piano, but began playing guitar when he was 20 and moved to Chicago in 1942.

He became a full-time musician around 1957 but remained unknown outside of the Chicago area where he played small clubs in the black neighborhoods and also at the open-air Maxwell Street Market. He was known for his electrified slide guitar playing roughly styled after that of Elmore James, his cheap Japanese guitars, and his raucous boogie beats. He was also famed among guitar players for having six fingers on his left hand.

After hearing Taylor with his band, the HouseRockers (Brewer Phillips on second guitar and Ted Harvey on drums) in 1970 at Florence's Lounge on Chicago's South Side, Bruce Iglauer - at the time a shipping clerk for Delmark Records - tried to get him signed by his employer. Having no success getting Delmark to sign Taylor, Iglauer formed a small record label with a $2500 inheritance and recorded Taylor's debut album, Hound Dog Taylor and the HouseRockers, on his fledgling Alligator Records in 1971. It was the first release on Alligator records, now a major blues label. It was recorded in a studio in just two nights. Iglauer began managing and booking the band, which toured nationwide and performed with Muddy Waters and Big Mama Thornton.[citation needed] The band became particularly popular in the Boston area, where Taylor inspired his young protege, George Thorogood.

Their second release, Natural Boogie, was recorded in late 1973, and led to greater acclaim and touring. In 1975, Taylor and his band toured Australia and New Zealand with Freddie King and Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee. His third Alligator album, Beware of the Dog, was recorded live in 1974 but was only released after his death. More posthumous releases occurred as well, including Genuine Houserocking Music and Release the Hound, on the Alligator label as well as some bootleg live recordings.

Taylor died of lung cancer in 1975, and was buried in Restvale Cemetery in Alsip, Illinois.Taylor was posthumously inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 1984.

To me, the must see guitar shop in Chicago is the Chicago Music Exchange. However, you will not find trashy stuff there only high end stuff likely beyond your budget. Still, it is fun to look.

You can get there using the L train system but the shop is on a local line that is slow so budget enough time for the trip.

Here is a link to the shop.

The kind of place you are looking for probably doesn't exist in Chicago proper. With high rents, it is difficult to make enough profit to stay in business when you sell guitars for under $1,000.

Hopefully a Chicago native will stop by the forum and give you a lead.

My Wife and I will be in Chicago for a few days and I would like to know if there are any Must See guitar shops in town. I am interested in trashy used/vintage stuff: Teisco/Kay/Danelectro and the like. I may only get to one, so can anyone make a suggestion?

Thanks!!

Seems that Jimmy Page envisioned a band that would go beyond what The Yardbirds, Cream, and The Who were doin, so he set out strategically to recruit musicians who fit his sonic vision. Recruiting the drummer, his description for what he wanted was "a hooligan".

"I want a super hooligan drum sound. Like this..." and he played Lonnie Mac's "Lonnie on the Move" for John Bonham. John recognized the drumming on that track, whoever it was, as his own membrane breaking in yer face sound, and signed on to what eventually became Led Zeppelin (named by John Entwistle and Keith Moon, btw).

When ya listen to this track, sure enough it sounds like John Bonham. So who in the world is this :?:

New EP free download]]> Goodtime is band from Mataró (Barcelona, Catalunya, Spain) formed in 2009 that joins to show to the public a project that moves between soul, RnB, jazz, pop, funk and blues. Its four members experiment with these styles creating fresh and original songs that forms a characteristic musical proposal and different from what is usually listened in this genres.

Their repertory includes such a variety of sensations that move them away from any label wanting to define them, but what do define them is their bet for the quality of compositions and the richness of harmonies and melodies to transmit in their shows from the tenderness of the most emotive song to the energy and groove of the most cheerful, with melodies for a pop public and also for black music lovers.

Our influences are several and come from musicians and bands as Raul Midon, Robben Ford, Richard Bona, Corinne Bailey Rae, India.Arie, Stevie Wonder, Larry Carlton, Victor Wooten, Al Green, Donny Hathaway, Marcus Miller, Gary Moore, Tommy Emmanuel, Louis Armstrong,...

We recently released a new EP that you can download for free with the link on the description of our
