I decided rather than making a new topic I would update my old one. The first sixteen or so replies are not of the current guitar in question.

I saw a guitar in this video of a band out of Newcastle, Australia. The singer is playing an unusual guitar which someone said could be a Gretsch. Go to 2:04 for a close up.

Old questions:

I saw this video of The Pretenders playing live and the guitarist is playing something I haven't seen before. If anyone could ID this that would be great. A good shot of it is at 1:00.

Old topic:

I saw these pictures of this guitar, possibly a Kay. I'd like to know what it is, It doesn't have any name on its headstock. Here are four of the photos:

Hi 101Volts.

Yeah, it is a mid 1960's Kay Vanguard or maybe a Vanguard II, I don't remember the differences off the top of my head. This is one of the fancier models since it has the triangular "pick" inlays rather than the standard dots.

I have a couple of these and they are fun to play and sound cool. The main problem with them is that you can't intonate them using the bridge. The bridge posts are very small diameter and close together compared to a modern adjustable bridge so it's not easy to replace the original bridge with something more functional.

Here's one just like it except that the tuners were changed. Says it's a model K326 Vanguard.

Thanks, Also how would you describe the overall sound of this guitar and are the pickups changeable?

This isn't exactly the same model Vanguard but the tone is probably closer than anything I could describe to you.

In my opinion, the value of the guitar is the pickups. Why would you want to change them?

That's like the sunburst Kay like I have, with the pickup attached under the embossed bump in the pickguard. Mine is actually pretty nice sounding-- P-90-ish. They also made guitars that looked much like this, only with "real" pickups. Steve, have you heard both the under-bump pickups and the "real" pickups in this era Kay? It would be interesting to know that the real pickups sounded like the one in my Kay. It would make sense that they might use the same pickup in both, only without a pickup cover when it was going under the pickguard.

Thanks for the replies everyone! I don't think I will be buying a Vanguard at the current price ($450) However I am going to keep my eyes open for Vanguards.

I updated the topic and now I would like to know what the guitarist (Not the singer) is playing in this video:

Thanks again!

And Chrissie Hynde has been described as "a girl who, if you had sex with her, you'd catch something...but it would be worth it."
