Hi All,

I've got an old Fender Jazz Bass, c. 1971, as the neck is not dated. Serial number is 308xxx...

It's refinished (horrible) and the pickguard is missing. It has a Leo Quan bridge and no thumb rest or bridge / pickup guards. The neck is maple with black / block inlays, nicely worn and yellowed with original decal and finish.

As far as I can remember, all of the electronics are original. No odd pots or obvious hack solder jobs or odd pickups.

It does however play well and has a killer tone.

I'm looking to sell this bass for fair street value. I realize it can be fixed up and sold for a substantial amount of money. I don't have the time or resources to go this route.

Any thoughts as to a realistic value on such a piece. The pictures below were taken with an iPhone - please excuse the quality and size : )

Tim

Hi Tim.

The refinish, missing parts and bridge alteration combine to push down the vintage value of your bass. The Blue Book Price Guide doesn't value instruments rated lower than Good condition. Your bass is probably closer to Fair condition although I personally like a maple neck with black block inlays so that would be a definite plus for me if I were looking for a player or instrument to restore.

The Blue Book puts a value of $1,300 on a CBS 1971 Jazzbass in Good condition. So, you have a bass that is below Good condition but has the black block inlays that were an option thus making them more rare and desirable.

Given the Blue Book typically values instruments a bit low I think I would want $1,300 for this bass if it were mine.
