I have to say that the best axe that I have ever played is my '57 reissue P-bass (it is a 1982). The sound, the feel, the action............ how does anything get better than that? I own (today) 15 basses. I have fretless 4 strings, a fretless 5 string, a fretted 5 string (a treker it is nice) etc. etc. but when I go sit in with a band on short notice............the Fender P bass is the one that goes. It is without a doubt the most versitile instrument that I own.
Footnote: I really enjoy this site, it is very informative with loads of information. It is an honor to be apart of it.

but the best overall guitar I've ever played was an Ibanez RG120. They're not expensive; you can buy them for $150 new at the Guitar Center when they're on sale. But the thin and wide neck just feels "right" to me, and the quality of the build is actually much better than you might expect.

I have to agree that Ibanez does make some very nice guitars. The last band that I was in, our lead had a really nice Hollow body......it was smooth. I have never owned one but have a great respect for them'

Thanks for the kind words Jcbass, we are working hard to make VintAxe a worthwhile site to visit regularly.

I agree mrblanche, that wide thin neck is comfortable for me as well. This is what I like about the neck on my Parker Fly. I just wish the upper horn on the Fly didn't poke me in the chest everytime I play it sitting down. I'll give the Ibanez RG120 a try next time I'm in Guitar Center. sb

Don't go above the RG170. The 120 has 2 humbuckers. The 170 has a single between them. But above that, they get into the Floyd Rose and locking nut weirdness, and it's just not worth the trouble.

I kind of cheated, because my nicest feeling/playing guitar is a Fender Stratocaster that I assembled from the best parts of 7 or 8 other stratocasters. It's completely amazing. It looks mostly like a stock strat, but there are small things all over like roller string trees and a great quality neck that make it play amazingly. It's also my best sounding strat. It just has that "feel" i guess.

but other than that, my nicest feeling/playing "stock" guitar is probably my early 70's epiphone Casino. in cherry red....mmmmmm.

best feeling guitar... mmm...

there's a tie for first... I have a beat-to-death 1966 Mosrite Ventures Model... "speed frets"... super-fast neck... and the body just fits so right on the 'ol beer gut (ridin' high, Buddy Holly stylee)...

right up against it is my Silvertone 1413L... total polar opposite in terms of the neck... but something about it just makes me want to glide... and that single pickup... mmm mmm mmm... rings like a bell.

basses...

I've slimmed down to two that I always keep going back to... one is a 70's Fender Musicmaster... TON of midrange (nice little tone cap replacement by yours truly), fast neck... I've gone through P's and J's, a Sterling, an RG, I even for a short time owned a Gretsch Monkees... well, the Gretsch was a close call... but I don't get hired out enough to warrant something so ostentatious... something about the neck on my MM keeps me going back to it.

Then there's my Supro Pocket bass... fatty-fat frets and a beefy neck, and a contact piezo in the bridge makes this thing feel and sound like an upright you put around your neck. LOOOOOOOOVE!!!

Ibanez GR-520. Early to mid nineties archtop, shorter scale. Thats for comfy lazy play. But for serious stuff, My Ibanez RG 7 string. The wide necks are wonderful for us with the wide paws!
