Many of the worst guitars I've ever seen have been homemade. I think the tradition of kids making guitars out of whatever they could gather is being lost in our culture as people become more affluent and can afford to buy their kids instruments.
Back in my day (yes I did walk a mile to school) it was common for kids to make their first musical instruments. Here's a couple of videos of some fellas keeping the tradition alive by building and playing their own "Cigar Box" guitars. Of course, these are better than anything I ever saw as a kid, but the are still pretty funky.
Check them out:

Vojko wants to quit beating around the bush and just make a guitar in the shape of a woman.
You can see and hear his provocative effort here:

Apparently I'm not the only person nostalgic over cigar box guitars. Here's a fella that makes them and asks $600 for the instruments. In this example he notes that the box was originally used for Hondouran cigars rather than Cuba cigars. Apparently, this box only has the aroma of Cuban cigars.
What do you think the Cuban cigar box guitar goes for? Yeoughhh!!

If they had a compact headstock - they might take off as travel guitars....

When it comes down to an electric guitar, if he has reinforced the box sufficiently to stand up to the pull of the neck and strings, then there's every possibility that the thing may sound just fine.

The Homemade Jamz Blues Band plays homemade guitars made from mufflers.
