Actually Peter Tork is/was more accomplished as a musician than a lot of people give him credit for. He was a folkie in Greenwich Village for a while, was later part of the LA folk/rock scene and played guitar, banjo and keyboards on the Monkees recordings. He still tours and records.
That said, Nesmith was always my favorite Monkee. I was lucky enough to be allowed to contribute to this Nesmith tribute CD:
