Here are the Grassroots playing their smash hit Midnight Confessions.
I'm attached to this song because it is the first song in memory that I recall hearing the bass as a distinct component of the band. As a kid, I hung out as the youngest member of the three amigos. My best friend Mike was my next door neighbor and 4 years older than I. Melvin was about 2 years my elder and lived at the end of the block, so I was the kid. I remember visiting Melvin after he had just received a shiny new bass rig from his parents. He put on a 45 of Midnight Confessions and mimed along with the bass line on his new bass. It was that up close visualization that helped me see the role the bass was playing in that song. I think Melvin mimed along at least as well as Rob Grill does in this clip.
