To add to the confusion, some '80s Japanese made Fender models used the Kahler made trem, another very similar looking but different unit.

That's got all the hallmarks of a kahler. The thing that stands out in my mind is a very strange locking nut on the gun metal gray super strat that I owned...... It had an adjustable single lever lock nut that required no tools and IT WORKED. HA
I've never seen it again but thought it was a great idea.

If I didn't already have one I'd be all over this. It's not a "steal" but it's a fair price with the tags and hard case. I did read somewhere (wikipedia???) that production of these was only in the hundreds. So here's the link.......

maybe, but that info almost certainly didn`t come from Fender Japan, they just don`t reveal production numbers on models, anyways, Wikipedia is the last place I go to for info.

Thanks pete.... but it was really more about letting anybody interested know that one was for sale and where I was able to find a little scrap of info on them. There seems to be a big giant vacuum of info for fender from that period.

thats true. When I got my FJ Buck tele I contacted the company and they wouldn`t tell me how many were made, but that hasn`t stopped people from coming up with all kinds of numbers all over the web.
21 frets is one of the best sites I know of for info on 80s Japanese Fenders, the Blackman site is woefully short on info on many many models so I never link to that site.

This is redundant seeing as how the quality of this instrument has been well established, but my girlfriend owns a gun metal blue performer bass and it is quite the instrument. I personally prefer the sharpness of a jazz bass but it's a close second for me. The neck is really nice for a guitar player (me) as well, way nicer than my bruno conqueror. Anyways, she didn't pay a cent for it because her dad co-owned a studio that went out of business and he decided to swap basses just before they went under and passed the bass on to her almost immediately. Great deal I think.
