Hi all-
My wife got me a 1967 Epiphone Casino from a large chain music store, who sold it to her claiming it was all original. She paid about $2500 for it, and upon playing it for the first time I realized that one of the tone pot's wasn't working right. I took it back and they tried to clean it, but it appears to be shot. Does anyone have any idea if I was to swap out the tone pot what this would do to the value of the guitar as it will no longer be all original? Also, does anyone have any suggestions on where to pick up a pot for this guitar? thanks!

Hey dcs81.

Changing the pot, even with a vintage replacement, will likely reduce the value of the guitar. In my opinion (and likely yours) the store needs to either allow you to return the instrument or reduce the selling price to something you are comfortable accepting. Unfortunately, there is no rule that I know of that would allow you to estimate the reduction in value a replaced pot might cause.

This is definitely a difficult situation. If you like the guitar, try to get them to compensate you for this defect. If you don't like the guitar, make them take it back. A chain store should stand behind their merchandise and they should have never let a guitar with a defective pot be sold in the first place. They are not eBay, a guitar tech should have checked the guitar before selling it.

$2500 seems like a pretty good deal for a vintage Casino, isn't that about what the more fancy reissues sell for?

Gotta say it makes me groan a bit thinking about a pot fix devaluing things like this. It's not like we're talking adding a triplebucker and Floyd Rose.

Amazing how trainspotting can take the joy out of pretty much any hobby.

Based on the fact that an Epiphone Casino is basically a Gibson ES330TD, you can almost certainly say it will be the same pot - so for 1967 most likely part - That pot was used in loads of Gibson guitars. Theres almost certainly several on ebay at any time, although maybe not listed as such. Try looking at any sixties Gibson looms - especially ones that start at $1

You should be able to get that pot (even with '66/'67 pot codes if you care that much) for well under $50.

As for devaluing - I would not pay any less for a used bass with one pot changed for a vintage equvalent. As long as the soldering was tidy, and it basically looked the same, I see no problem.
