Old Kraftsman (Kay 300)

(first post) I've recently acquired this Old Kraftsman electric. I think it is a Kay K300 model rebranded for sale through the Spiegel Catalog? From the few old Kay catalogs I've seen, they offered something very similar to this in 1962, but did not offer it in 1966. I haven't seen any Spiegel Catalogs from this era.

It plays well and sounds cool. Condition is quite good except for the pickguard. The upper part of that has a hole, several cracks and some crumbling. I wonder if any of you have an idea to what to do about that? I know a new pickguard can be made, but that is beyond my skill and tool kit. It is quite a large and complicated shape with 17 holes. The original pickguard material is quite thick. Is there a way to stabilize it to prevent further damage?
