From what I can read, for it to be a Matsumoku, it would have to be produced by 1987, since the factory burned down at that time and went out of business.

If that serial number means anything (and they often didn't), my guess would be that it's either a 1977 or 1987 production, if it's Matsumoku.

My first reaction was: "Hey, its him!"
But when i looked closer, i noticed that the pickups are different.

I think the auction description is sort of suggesting that those aren't the original pickups. I think it's basically the same guitar as yours, only with a different name on the headstock. This fits with the people's suggestion that this is a Matsumoku with one of the many names that Matsumoku had put on them. I've seen basses *identical* to my Matsumoku-made Epiphone, only with names like Aria and Conrad on them. Even when there are very slight differences between similar instruments, that doesn't mean they weren't made in the same factory.

I have been told that Conrad was made by that same company. I have the identical bridge and neck shape with Conrad where your guitar says Custom.

Mine is black with gold knobs saying volume and tone. My pick-ups have individual screws for each string for adjusting with silver pick-up bodies.

This guitar sounds great. But could use new fret wire in a couple of spots due to wear.

Bought mine at a garage sale in central Arizona this last summer. I paid $125 dollars with gig bag.
