Kent String Spacing Question

I have a Kent at home much like this one (sorry for the long URL):

Mine is missing the pickguard and electronics. I bought it as a project. I've noticed that the strings are very close together. There is more space between the edge of the neck and the E strings than on other guitars of my aquaintance - making the string spacing uneven and generally too close for my tastes. This seems to be a function of where the holes are drilled in the (tremolo) tailpiece. The plastic compensated bridge doesn't seem to have slots manufactured into it to control string spacing.

Looking at closeups of similar Kents online, like the one in the above auction, I see this seems to be common. Are there any Kent owners out there who have noticed this, considered it to be a problem and have come up with a solution? I kind of wonder how much effort/expense I want to put into this if the strings are going to be uncomfortably close together.
