Jap. Ventura SG copy

I own an old ( probably late 60's or early 70's Ventura SG copy and am wondering how or if the date can be established and what the worth of the guitar might be .
It's in pretty good shape , altho' could use some minor refinishing.

Hi Nitro,

The Japanese imports are frequently under priced in the Price Guides since "real collectors" consider them inferior. However, there is growing interest in these instruments by people that compare their materials and workmanship to moderately priced guitars produced today.

My Price Guide doesn't list the SG but it values the Les Paul copy to be between $250-$350. The SG is probably about the same.

If you are willing to check the pot code you might be able to get a more accurate date of production for your instrument. I have a link to a pot code date reference list on my "Dating Your Gear" link.

Finally, I'd probably avoid "minor refinishing" unless your just talking about a clear finish touch up. Honest play wear is considered acceptable in a vintage instrument. I like my old folks with honest wrinkles in their face rather than surgically altered to "look younger". I like my old guitars to tell the stories of their life with the bumps and scratches that accumulate over time. I think most vintage guitar collectors agree with me.

Hey , thanks for the info,
The refinishing is due to what looks like a possible cigarette burn next to the bridge.
I'm not really interested in selling ( unless of course for a large chunk
This guitar is actually hotter than an 85 Les Paul I have. It plays exceptionally well and sounds just as well.
