Everyone seems to overlook vintage Ampeg amps, but an early 60s Ampeg like the Reverberocket or the Gemini will get you some pretty smooth CRUNCH! I swear by my Ampeg Gemini I. All the Ampeg amps can usually be had for under $600, and they were built really well. Another vintage amp that will get you some serious raw blues sounds would be a Silvertone 1448 amp. It comes as a head and cab. Jack White has been using a similar Silvertone for years. Usually cost around $500-$700, but again these amps were made in the US and were all hardwired, soldered point to point.
