well, my wife gets on me for not documenting my numerous projects. so, this is my progress log on this guitar, to keep her happy. i hope it is found to be interesting to someone out there.

i figured this guitar was beyond restoration to original, so i decided to take the hot rod mod approach. in working on it, i found the quality to be quite good, in comparison to later 60s MIJs guitars. the wood is great, the craftsmanship is decent, and the electronics are fantastic. the pickups have an ohm rating equivalent to a strat single coil. the selector switches are a tank. im used to these things being very flimsy, touchy and usually need lots of work. this one is very well made. :D

these are pictures of the almost finished neck. still needs a bone nut and maybe a little more buffing here and there. my son got at it and put a little gouge around the 5-6th fret. (i may just leave that). im also making a badge for it, but i put a transparent waterslide on there too. so when the badge falls off in the future, whomever has it will know what it is. or was. the back of the neck was left au natural, which is how i like em. (well, a little hand rub poly to keep it clean with a natural feel) now, im just waiting for my friend to sand blast the aluminum pickguards and it will be ready for assembly. i cant wait.

I second Spud, the guitar is progressing nicely. I especially like what you did with the neck, painting the back of the head and keeping the neck natural.

How many hours do you figure you have invested so far John?

well all i gotta say is, holy crap this guitar is awesome. you never really know what a guitar is going to sound like until you play it with a group. ive been jamming on this thing for the past month and have giged with it twice so far. the tone of this guitar can blend right in or totally stand out, and is always clear. it gets frequent comments. im very impressed with its versatility, i can get just about any type of sound out of it. it also handles overdrive and distortion like a champ. im totally blown away. :D :D :D

Beautiful. If you get a chance I wouldn't mind seeing a picture of the backside of the finished guitar. Did you end up replacing the dead pickup with a Strat pup of some sort?

i ended up putting a single coil from an american strat in there. i had to take the cover off because it wouldnt fit in the hole. i also wrapped it in cotton twine and dipped it in wax. im just waiting for a replacement to pop up on e-shmay. but im not too hopeful. the strat pup is the weakest link in the chain. i couldnt find a matching neck plate either. the dimensions are really wacked. i just sand blasted and painted it for now.
