Kay Acoustic Guitar

Hi, I am searching for the age of this guitar. My guess it was from the lat 1970's. It was given to my mother as a gift new.

I would love to know the model, how much you think it's worth, and if it's a good quality guitar or something mass produced. Do you know the sound quality?

It doesn't have any strings, but I plan on stringing it up, and learning to play.

i'd think it's at least 10 years older than late 70's .

string it up and try it out, it might sound ok. but it's not a top quality instrument, basically a cheap plywood thing.

but i like it anyway.

Hi Sherryfain.

What you have is a Kay model K-6845 archtop acoustic made between 1961-65. It was their super auditorium sized archtop known as the Mercury. The body is made from maple plywood and it has the "thin lite" neck so the neck profile is a bit more slender than a typical Kay making it better suited for a generally smaller female hand.

As far as price, probably in the $100-$200 range depending on some specifics of condition. Here's one similar to yours that didn't sell at the $250 price point:


Here is a link to what looks like the correct style pickguard for your instrument if you want to make that part of the restoration. It is the right shape, but contact the seller and double check the width of the guard to make sure it will fit correctly:
