appreciate a bit of advice if poss..been wanting to buy a Tele for a while and have been watching a custom made one on ebay which i'm going to put a bid on tonight...but most of the specs don't actually mean that much to me..can any of you tell me if this sounds ok please?looks awesome and the guy's dropped his starting bid to one i'm prepared to pay..he says it cost over £600 to make

"# Thru neck and body for maximum sustain like 52 Fender Telecaster
# 9 piece maple, mahogany and walnut sandwich body/neck
# 1 x Fender Texas Special in bridge position
# 1 x Dimarzio Twang King in neck position
# Real mother of pearl and abalone inlays in body and tree of life style in fingerboard (the wait was 6 months for this work to be carried out)
# Finished in high gloss cellulose lacquer
# Rosewood fingerboard with medium jumbo frets
# Fender Schaller machine heads
# Vintage style 3 saddle Tele bridge for that real snappy sound (back loading)
# 3 position switch
# 2 x a chrome vintage Tele Knobs with abalone cappings
# Chrome pickup selector tip and strap buttons"

Sound:

The guitar has great resonance almost like a 1969 Telecaster Thinline (tho its a solid) but with more sustain and top bite. It has echoes of Brad Paisley and Merle Haggard using the same 10k Texas Special pickup and the bottom E and A have a Gretsch like ring when played open.

Middle position is great and Eagles, Joe Walsh type ‘take it easy’ chorus sound is easily achieved as the neck Dimarzio pickup is clean and mellow with no muddiness usually associated with Teles. Nice and bluesy in the neck position with enough mellow bite to cut through in a mix

Action and setup:

Frets were set and dressed locally with action similar to the USA Fenders and almost identical to my James Burton Tele.

Neck is quite shallow D shaped at back, not as fat as a 52 Tele but more modern feeling.

Intonation and tuning spot on.

I don't see anything on that list of features to complain about. The pickups will definately produce more output compared to standard Tele pups.

The only thing I'm uncertain about is the 9 piece sandwich body/neck. This combination of wood will certainly influence tone but it's hard to say whether it will be in a good way or a not good way. The seller describes resonance as sounding more like a thinline than a solidbody. Is this what you want? I know it's hard to tell without actually hearing the guitar. I guess this is the risk you take when buying without playing.

Did you ask the fella why he wants to sell a guitar he obviously put a lot of time and money into having made?

Good luck with the auction. sb
