in volume 7 of the Vintage Japan series of books the SX`s are featured on the cover with an extensive article on them. Of course it`s all in Japanese and I get my wife to translate bits for me when needed but I`m not going to ask her to translate the entire article...sorry, However, I do see the date No. 10 1974 as the year that model was introduced. Came in 4 colors...black, natural, and two shades of brown. Rare may depend on where one lives, I see the SX models on line here quite often, they do always seem to sell and I think thats because old Yamahas have become somewhat collectable in Japan, maybe baby boomers getting nostalgic. They say the 125 sold for 120,ooo yen at the time, they also have the SX-80 and SX-60. They also picture Rory Gallagher {!} playing one, Tommy Bolin, As time went on they came out with more elaborate models with figured wood tops etc etc. as well as Pat Simmons from the Doobie Brothers and Goerge Terry from Clapton`s band. They came in different varieties of p`su arrangements too...singles, P-90 looking types and humbuckers. The one in natural finish shows several pieces for the bady back. Seems that model inspired Greco to make the Cougar, very similar in appearance. I have an SG-35 from 1972/`73 that I like a lot...cool factor is very high...the SX models appeal less to me though I`ve never played one, and I am a huge Yamaha fan, I own several high end electrics and a BUNCH of early Yamaha nylon strings. Might change opinion if I ever get my hands on an SX but visually I`m not attracted to them. They must have caught on because Yamaha went on to introduce quite a few models, some higher ends so there were probably lots of them around at one time...how many still are is impossible to know but as I say, they show up regularly here.
