Brand is "Vintage", seller says its made early 80s. Its a Vintage V-58 Flying V. And looks like a korina , but it has a darkwood, natural or gloss finish. The pickguard is black and it has Gotoh pickups. The seller thinks it might have been made in the same factory as Tokais. Anyone know about it? Price worth, if its good, etc.

Hey Madness,

The only Vintage brand I'm aware of are the instruments distributed by John Hornby Skewes in the UK. It is my understanding these instruments are entry level and produced somewhere in Asia (not Japan). You can see the current products here:

If there was a Japanese produced instrument branded Vintage it isn't documented in any of the literature I own. If you find out something, be sure to let us know. sb

think it's one of the Vintage brand mentioned above but not in the current range...pretty sure i've seen a few of them on ebay...the guys in all of my local guitar shops reckon the Vintage range is pretty good value for the money and that their more expensive ones are very good.
as for it being 80s? i've no idea how long that company has been going

Hey Ty,

I've done a bit more looking around and I've still found no evidence that Vintage guitars were ever built in Japan. I did discover that the new ones are being built in Vietnam.

As far as price goes, let's suppose your seller is right and the guitar was built by Tokai in the early 80's. I don't think even a Tokai V copy will bring $800. The only one that has sold on eBay recently is certainly inferior to the one you are looking at but it only fetched $200. You can see it here:

Another thing to consider is that you can probably buy a 1980's Gibson Flying V for $800. Check out some completed listings here:

It is possible your seller is absolutely correct about this guitar but I would inquire about his bases for claiming it is made in Japan. In terms of resell, you are probably better off buying one of the Gibson V's rather than a guitar with a sketchy production history. Just my opinion. sb

I'm agreeing with SayNoToVorderman here - the current UK Vintage brand won't have been built in Japan - it's a good quality but budget range and isn't more than about 10 years old, so early ones will almost certainly be Korean - and of course, not really collectable or worth paying $800 for.

It may be a different "Vintage" brand - there are more different names that MIJ copies were sold under than all of us put together could ever remember. Possibly you could get a pic of the headstock logo - to see if it's the same as the one on the current range.

And do slap me if this is a stoopid question: it's definitely a "Vintage", not a "Vantage"?

Jon.

I too think it's Vantage, not Vintage.Made in Japan in the 80's by Matsumoku, not Tokai.Click on the the FV575 Flying V on this page for pictures. If it is a Vantage, they're well made, good quality guitars, but I think the $800 price is way out of line.

All the Vantages I've seen, and all the ones that came up in the first few clicks at that Vantage site, have the sort of } shaped top of the headstock. The guitar in the pic that Madness posted has the standard pointy top on the headstock.
