Hi Mike,

Hondo made the "star shape" H-775 around 1983 which is similar to the guitar in your picture. However, to my knowledge, the H-775 only came in a one humbucker version. The H-775 also had a bound top, I can't tell whether the guitar in your picture has this feature or not.

I have a red H-775 that I would sell if you are interested. sb

Hey Mike.

I would need a better picture to tell you who made the guitar in your photograph.

In the mid 1980's, a lot of companies made "star shaped" guitars. Here are a few that come to mind:

Guild X-88D Flying Star
Ibanez Destroyer II
Dean ML
Tokai Five Star

I can get a picture of my Hondo, but at the moment my son has taken the camera to take pictures of his car (Anyone want to buy a 1st Gen RX-7)

I'll get the camera back and post a couple of pictures soon.

I blew up the picture, it looks like it has an Ibanez headstock if you look really closely...

The headstock is clearly an Ibanez copy, if not an original one.

For what it's worth, these "Destroyer" models are quite desirable. And they still make them:



The red fingerboard is going to be a clue to an expert. I'm not coming up with anything on it, yet.

OK, a little more searching, and I found it's an Ibanez Destroy DT250.

Did he mean exactly like that or explorer in shape cos if so Iv got an old 1979 Hondo Revival explorer (wine red) I think it must be the only one left in the world hehe has the dimarzios and the grovers is a dead ringer for the real Gibson jobby
Vintaxe hav you any info on the Hondo evival explorer in one of your catologues cos there seems to be next to none anywhere,only place Iv seen any ref to them is on harmony C

Hey Nick,

Based on my literature, it looks like the Z was first marketed by Hondo in 1983. They were gone by 1988. I don't have any 1986-87 literature so I can't tell you for sure when marketing stopped.

In 1983, the base model was a H-77 and there were a variety of variations that had model numbers up to H-780. There was also a fancy graphics version that came in 3-4 variations called the H-781.

Looks to me like the model numbers and features changed every year until they disappeared. If you want info on your specific instrument I suggest you invest $10 in the Catalog Library to research exactly what you have. Given the time you spend to scrape together bits and pieces of information, the subscription is cheap and will likely answer your questions.
