Look at the pickguard, i don't think it's a Kawai...

I've been looking around since you first posted this thread and I think your guitar was likely built by Kawai. I haven't been able to find an exact match to your model but the trem unit, knobs, pups, etc. were used extensively on Kawai guitars.

This 1968 Kawai is the closest match I've found so far. Obviously, not your guitar, but there were not a lot of builders producing solid teardrops during this period. I frequently run across undocumented Kawai guitars; I think you may have one of them.

Excellent suggestion Michael but after checking the 1968 KAPA catalog, the Kawai appears to be a closer match.

Here is what is persuading me right now. That slider switch plate below the strings is typical Japanese design. The Minstrel has individual pup switches above the strings.

The trem unit is typical Japanese hardware as are the covered bridge and knobs.

I realize none of this is definitive since the KAPA has some Japanese looking hardware as well, but if we are talking late 60's Japanese import, Kawai is a safe bet until someone finds the exact match.

If it is a KAPA, it will have an exceptionally thin neck, a trademark of all their guitars I have ever seen.
