Interesting Nick.

It is basically a H-1010 body shape, but I don't recall ever seeing a Hondo fully bound like this.

I think it must be from the early 1980's but it doesn't show up in any of my literature.

A mystery for sure, I'll keep an eye out for information.

clearly not of the quality used to by hondo, the neckjoint is one of the smoothest i've ever seen.
i suspsect this one was made by matsumoku, or tokai that's where hondo had some quality guitars made.

Not the same guitar but I have its cousin in a similar state of restoration:

Conveniently this still has its model number sticker - it's an HS740AB - AB is the finish, Antique Brown. It also has an inspection sticker - these are little circular beige/brown things I've seen on lots of Hondos - and other Korean guitars which I assume to be Samicks. This makes me wonder if these nice set-neck Hondos are high-end Korean, not Japanese like we tend to assume.

Certainly there was some nice stuff coming from Cort by the late 70s/early 80s, so there's no reason to assume Samick wasn't capable of the same.

Pickups on my LP are unbranded chrome humbuckers, this makes me think it pre-dates DiMarzios being fitted to Hondos, so I guess mine would be 77-78ish, after the headstock change but before DMs became standard.

Definitely will do. I just need to find a bit of time to do a partial headstock refin - if you look closely at the logo, you can see the clear coat's come away, presumably where a previous owner's had a sticker over the Hondo badge. I just need to blend the edges of that & relacquer it. Not strictly necessary, I suppose but it will look a bit better.

The finish on mine's very thin, not like the half inch of poly you find on most Oriental guitars - wonder if it's nitro?

I'd guess from the similarities that yours is about the same age as mine, maybe a year or so younger because it has DiMarzios. The Hondo II logo changed to a plain "Hondo" with a stylised "H" symbol in the late 70s/early 80s. Yours has the older logo so I'd say it's definitely 70s.
